Harmony/VISTA
Service
Learning Demonstration Project
Parent,
Teacher, Student Association (PTSA)
At
several Indiana schools, Harmony VISTA members help engage parents
in the PTSA by recruiting parents, helping to organize meetings and
events, developing trainings, and engaging parents in school reform
activities. At
Northwest High School in Indianapolis the Harmony VISTA member helped
organize a parent forum on gang violence. A panel of students, police
officers, and community members informed parents about gang related
issues and answered questions related to gang violence in the community.
Over 60 parents attended.
Parent
Forums and Parent Congress In
2004 the first annual Parent Congress for over 200 parents was held
in Indianapolis. Harmony VISTA members helped plan the Congress with
the Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) and the Indiana
Center for Family School and Community Partnerships. The purpose
of the Congress was to spread information and knowledge about small
school reform to parents in the IPS district. Parents from
the five high schools going through this reform attended.
A
second Parent Congress is in the planning stages and will be held
in the spring of 2005.
